Gallinara is a small island near the Ligurian coast. It is located in the Riviera di Ponente in the immediate vicinity of the municipality of Albenga. The territory of the island forms the Riserva naturale regional dell'Isola Gallinara ( German: Regional Nature Reserve Gallinara Island ).

Environment

The island has one of the largest nesting colonies of Mittelmeermöwe (Larus michahellis ) is located in the Tyrrhenian Sea.

History

They were named the island from the wild chicken populations ( Gallina is with chicken or hen translated), which, according to Cato and Varro, in the past there had their habitat. In the 5th century it served as a refuge Martin of Tours, and consequently it was used as the site of a Benedictine monastery, which was in turn sold in 1842 to private individuals.

On the surrounding seabed, various relics and artifacts, some dating from the 5th century BC, found, originating from the area of Marseille. Some finds are on display in the Maritime Museum of Albenga. Among them are many amphorae from the time of the Roman Empire. Before the island Gallinara the first underwater salvage history was conducted in 1950 under the direction of Nino Lamboglia.
