Gallinaro

Gallinaro is a municipality in the province of Frosinone in the Italian region Latium, located about 1249 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012). It is located 133 km east of Rome and 52 km east of Frosinone.

Geography

Gallinaro is located on a long stretched, narrow ridge above the valley of the Melfa. Gallinaro is a member of the Comunità Montana Valle di Comino.

The nearby towns are Alvito, Atina, Picinisco, San Donato Val di Comino and Settefrati.

History

The Castle of Gallinaro was first mentioned in 1023. It was probably built by the Counts of Sora. 1067 she came to the Counts of Aquino. In the 13th century, the Santuario di San Gerardo was founded, which was rich by donations. 1806 Gallinaro was a hamlet of San Donato Val di Comino. In 1948 it became an independent municipality for a referendum again. During an earthquake in 1948 the town was badly affected.

The old center is still its medieval appearance. 2003 Tour was inaugurated by the place.

Santuario di San Gerardo

1102 was an English pilgrim named Gerard, who died here on the way to the Holy Land, buried near Gallinaro. A few years later, another sick pilgrims had grave on a vision of Gerard and was then healthy. This is what a lively pilgrimages and a sanctuary, Sanctuary of San Gerardo, first mentioned in 1259, was erected, which was thanks to generous donations constantly being developed.

Nuova Gerusalemme

In the spring of 1947, the small Giuseppina Norcia had shortly before her communion in which they saw a vision of the baby Jesus sleeping on a cloud. On May 15, 1974, reiterated this vision, with Giuseppina, the Virgin Mary and the Archangel Michael appeared, who demanded of her build a cradle for the baby Jesus. Then, a chapel was built on the site of the vision that is commonly referred to as the Nuova Gerusalemme (New Jerusalem). It is the goal of thousands of pilgrims every year.
