Gallipoli Star (Ottoman Empire)

The well-known in Germany and Austria under the name Iron Crescent Ottoman war medal ( Ottoman حرب مدالیه سی, IA Harb Madalyası ) was founded on March 1, 1915 Sultan Mehmed V and consists of only one class. She was awarded both members of the Ottoman Empire and its allies. In the English-speaking world it is referred to as the " Gallipoli Star ". The Iron Crescent was the last award, which was founded by the Ottoman Empire.

Appearance

The war medal is in the shape of a five-pointed red enamelled star, on which the crescent moon rests. In the middle is the cipher ( " Tughra " ) of the Sultan, including the date ( 1333 = 1915). It was awarded to a red and white band.

From the medal, numerous variants are occupied, which vary depending on the manufacturer, both in size ( 53-68 mm diameter ) and in the base material (bronze, tin, silver, iron, aluminum).

Furthermore, numerous models are in use, in which the upper end of the band, a square pin with the name of the battle or campaign was also present. Are known to date, six different battle clasps. Carrying method

As the Iron Cross of the Order was worn in its full form only at award days. The band was then also sewn as with the Iron Cross, Second Class, with the second buttonhole of the tunic, created the Order as Ansteckorden only for the dress uniform.

Award

The order was awarded with an official certificate. Entitled to the award were next to the Sultan, the two supreme commanders of Liman von Sanders and Enver Pasha. With the armistice of the Ottoman Empire on 31 October 1918, the award was not awarded. After 1920, the Sultan, however, refused to recognize others as conferred by him awards.

The Turkish Law of November 21, 1951, however, explicitly permitted the wearing of former imperial Ottoman medals and decorations, as far as they had been awarded for achievements in war.
