Gallium is a chemical compound of the gallium from the group consisting of the hydroxides.

Occurrence

Gallium hydroxide occurs naturally as a mineral Söhngeit.

Production and representation

Gallium is formed in the neutralization of gallium ( III) salt solutions. Gallium hydroxide hydrate is obtained as a by-product of aluminum production.

Properties

Gallium occurs either as a colorless amorphous mass or as colorless orthorhombic crystalline substance and pseudocubic. In addition to the gallium hydroxide and gallium ( III) oxide monohydrate ( GaOOH ) can be regarded as an additional hydroxide of gallium ( Galliumoxidhydroxid ) which on prolonged heating of gallium hydroxide at about 170 ° C, by heating to 900 ° C at 50 kbars under hydrothermal conditions or slow caused by aging. When heated above 500 ° C, it decomposes to form gallium ( III) oxide.
