Gallon

The gallon (English gallon ) is a unit of space (dry, liquid measure, see room dimensions ). There are different definitions of the gallon in the measurement systems of different countries.

Unit symbol: Imp.gal. , US.liq.gal. , US.dry.gal.

Imperial system of units

1 Imp.gal. = 568.261.250/473.176.473 US.liq.gal. ≈ 1.20095 US.liq.gal.

1 Imp.gal. = 4 Imp.qt. = 8 Imp.pt. = 16 = 32 Imp.cup Imp.gi. = 160 Imp.fl.oz. = 4.54609 liters (exactly by definition! ) = 568.261.250/2.048.383 inch ³ ³ ≈ 277.41945 inch

The British ( Imperial ) gallon is based on a medieval English Biermaß. In 1824, it was redefined on a physical basis than the volume of 10 pounds of distilled water at 62 ° F ( 17 ° C), measured with brass weights of a given composition at a fixed air pressure. In 1985 a new definition was introduced based on the metric liter Canadian model. In the U.S., on the other hand uses a certificate from the wine trade definition ( see below).

American system of measurement

1 US.liq.gal. = 4 qt liquid. = 8 US.liq.pt. = 16 = 32 US.cup US.liq.gi. = 128 US.fl.oz. = 231 inch ³ = 3.785411784 liters

The U.S. gallon is based on a medieval English Weinmaß, which was originally defined as a cylinder with a height of 6 inches ( engl. inches) and a diameter of 7 inches. The county number π was then usually approximated by 22/7. In 1706, during the reign of Queen Anne, the Weingallone was therefore redefined as a cuboid with dimensions of (3 × 7 × 11 ) inch ³, which is the old cylinder volume, calculated with the above-mentioned approximation for π. This definition is in the United States still in use in Britain itself but it was originally from the beer trade Imperial Gallon (see above) displaces. Since the inch is now defined by the metric unit meter ( 1 inch = 25.4 mm), the volume indicated above in liters of the U.S. gallon is exact.

Furthermore, 1 petroleum barrel = 42 US.gal. = 9702 inch ³ = 158.987294928 liters

Dry measure

1 US.dry.gal. US.dry.qt = 4 = 8 = 268.8025 US.dry.pt inch ³ = 4,404 liters

1 US.bushel = 4 peck = 8 US.dry.gal. = 2150.42 inch ³ = 35.239 liters

92,400 U.S. dry gallon ( corn gallon) = 107 521 U.S. liquid gallon 1 U.S. dry gallon ( corn gallon) ≈ 1.1636 U.S. liquid gallon

Metric gallon

1 metric gallon = 8 pints = 16 metric metric cup = 4 liters
