Galway United F.C.

The Galway United Football Club (Irish Cumann Peile Ghaillimh Aontaithe ) is a football club established in 1937 from the western Irish city of Galway. The club was called Initially Galway Rovers and has also been included under this name in 1977 in the League of Ireland before 1981 assumed its present name. Galway United play new to the 07/08 season in the top division of Ireland, the " Premier Division ".

History

After the founding of the club in 1937, Galway played quite successfully in lower Irish leagues. 1976/77 Galway was invited as a non- league club to participate in the League Cup the League of Ireland; because of the convincing power ( it arrive in three games after all, two draws against members of the League of Ireland ) League were the former Galway Rovers for the season 1977/78 approved for. In league play at first rather unsuccessful, succeeded in 1981, the finals of the League Cup. The final one but lost by a balanced game in a penalty shootout against Dundalk FC.

Mid-1980s, Galway was then one of the leading teams in the league; 1984/85 but managed the unsuccessful entry into the Cup final. 1985/86 won the Galway League Cup and was unbeaten after 16 league games in a row and a championship lead until March but still only runner-up.

After the first and so far only victory of the Irish Cup in May 1991, followed in the 1991/92 season the sudden crash, the club was relegated as the worst team in the Premier Division. However, it was achieved by the championship of the First Division of the immediate resurgence. However, the second relegation in 1995/96 then led to three years of second-class, but in the 1996/97 season succeeded as second-division club 's victory in the League Cup. Since 2002 Galway plays for the third time in the First Division.

So far, Galway United failed to qualify for three times European Cup competitions. However, the club failed no points each in the first round. 1985/86 it failed in the European Cup Winners at the Danish side Lyngby BK with 2:3 and 0:1, the year after they lost the UEFA Cup against Dutch side FC Groningen, with 1:3 and 1:5, 1991/92 you failed again in the Cup Winners' Cup in a Danish club Odense BK at this time with 0:3 and 0:4.

From 2005 to 2011 was Nick Leeson cause the collapse of Barings Bank in 1995, general manager of the club.

The 2011 season ended Galway United last to the Premier Division and stood for the lost relegation matches against Monaghan United relegated firmly. In December 2011, the Board announced that they have applied for the license for the season 2012 withdrawn.
