Gamani Corea

Gamani Corea (* November 4, 1925 in Sri Lanka, † November 3, 2013 in Colombo, Sri Lanka ) was a Sri Lankan diplomat who, among others, 1974-1984 Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development ( UNCTAD) had.

Life

After schooling Corea studied at the University of Ceylon and later at Corpus Christi College, University of Cambridge. A subsequent post-graduate studies in economics at the University of Oxford, he graduated with a Philosophiae Doctor ( Ph.D. Economics).

He then joined the government service in 1952 in the then Ceylon, initially performing tasks in the Secretariat of Planning of the Ministry of Planning and Economic Affairs and was also until 1960, Secretary of the National Planning Council. As Director of Economic Research at the Bank of Ceylon in the years 1960 to 1964 he belonged in 1964 to a team of experts that prepared the foundation of UNCTAD. After the foundation on December 30, 1964, he was in 1965 and 1969 Chairman of the UNCTAD Expert Group on International Monetary Affairs. Meanwhile, he was initially 1965-1970 Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Planning and Economic Affairs and then to 1973 the Bank of Ceylon Deputy Governor.

After working as a chairman of a United Nations conference on cocoa in 1972, he was 1972-1974 Chairman of the UN Committee for Development Planning, which he had already served before. In addition, he was Ambassador of Sri Lanks 1973 in the European Economic Community ( EEC ) and the Benelux countries.

In April 1974, Corea was appointed as the successor of Manuel Pérez- Guerrero for the third Secretary-General of UNCTAD, held this function for over ten years until December 1984.

After retiring from UNCTAD, he took further important tasks within international organizations under international law, in particular the so-called South-South affairs of the Third World. He was, among others, between 2002 and 2003 Chairman of the South Centre, an organization of developing countries based in Geneva.

In addition to his many activities, he also wrote some of the textbooks that deal with the issues of Third World, developing countries and the North -South conflict. Among his most famous publication include:
