Gambian general election, 1977

The parliamentary elections in Gambia in 1977 took place on 4 April 1977 in the West African nation of Gambia. These elections ( also: General elections) were selected for 35 seats in the House of Representatives (English House of Representatives ).

The People's Progressive Party (PPP ) could again reach more than three-quarters of the seats. The second strongest force was the National Convention Party (NCP ).

Election procedures and circles

It was (English House of Representatives ) elected for the fifth time the House of Representatives. The House of Representatives had a total of 44 members of which were elected 35 in a direct line. Nine other members were appointed by the chiefs.

The number and distribution of electoral districts has been slightly changed compared to the 1972 election. With the renaming of the capital Banjul Bathurst in the renaming in the management unit with the three constituencies was after, Banjul North ', Banjul Central' and, Banjul South ' completed. Three new constituencies were created, one by the division of, Serekunda ' in the Kombo St. Mary to, Serekunda East ' and ' West Serekunda '. In the management unit Brikama are the constituencies, Northern combo ', Southern Combo ' and ' Eastern Kombo ' been redistributed and the constituency, Central combo ' was created. In October 1975 came under the leadership Pap Cheyassin Secka the National Liberation Party. Before the elections in 1977 the party National Convention Party was founded under the chairmanship of Sheriff Dibba.

The NLP joined together in an alliance with the UP.

In the 35 constituencies went to 78 candidates and the majority of voters wanted to get. Among the PPP came with 35 candidates in each constituency, she was challenged by eight candidates of UP and 30 candidates of the NCP. The NLP, in an alliance with the UP, came with two own candidate. Next there were two candidates in this election, that belonged to no party.

Bakau 1978

After the elected representative of the constituency Bakau, Bakary Camara P. (NCP ), was died in 1978, was recognized in June 1978 by-elections in the constituency. Dembo Bojang (NCP ) won the constituency for itself.
