Gambier Island

Gambier Iceland is an island near Vancouver (British Columbia, Canada). It is named after Lord James Gambier ( * October 13, 1756 in the Bahamas, † April 19, 1833 in Ivor at Uxbridge ), British admiral and 1802-1803 Governor of Newfoundland. With this naming the line was continued in the naming of the islands in Howe Sound to a party in the Battle at the Glorious First of June.

The 6893 acre island located in the fjord of Howe Sound, 10 kilometers north of Horseshoe Bay.

Those with only 200 inhabitants sparsely populated island is less crowded than the neighboring island Bowen Iceland, which is very popular with tourists. Nevertheless, its population tripled in the summer season.

Gambier Iceland can only be reached by boat. A gravel road provides traffic between the small communities on the island. On Gambier Iceland there is a shop and a hotel ( bed and breakfast ). The main settlement on the island is called New Brighton. Gambier Harbour, another small settlement, located to the east.

The inhabitants of the island choose two representatives to the Iceland Trust, a partnership of independent local governments to protect the environment, the preservation of the landscape and the promotion of economic development of the islands of British Columbia.
