Gams is a municipality in the canton of St. Gallen. It is located in Constituency mountain.

Geography

Gams is located in the Rhine Valley on the main road 16 in front of the pass road for wild house, at the foot of Alpsteins, at 478 meters above the sea. The municipal area extends from the burner box with 440 meters above sea level to the summit of Mutschen to 2121 meters. The municipality covers 22:26 square kilometers, spread over fields and meadows in the plane of the Rhine valley, forests and meadows on the slopes above the village and an alpine zone with various Alpine and mountain peaks.

Population

History

First traces of settlement could be found in Martin Sacker. The prehistoric axes were probably stored as a Bronze Age weapons depot there, and probably dating from around 2000 BC date.

In a deed of gift from the year 835 AD, the city name, then still first mentioned as Campesias. This document bequeathed Berengar and his wife Imma their property to the monastery of St. Gall.

After possessions of the pin and the Einsiedeln Abbey Disentis in Gams of the 10th century are represented, the village came afterwards into the possession of the Barons of Hohensax. The rule Hohensax was then taken over by the Habsburgs end of the 14th century. Later Gams came under the rule of the Lords of Zurich Bonstetten.

In the Old Zurich War of 1446 came in Gams to a bloody battle, were repulsed as Appenzell and Toggenburg by Austrian troops. In 1497, the Gamser bought finally free, and came under federal dominion of places Glarus and Schwyz. Gams was affiliated to the Bailiwick of Gaster.

Attractions

Interesting in Gams include the Old Mill, the parish church of St. Michael, the chapel and the castle Gasenzen Hohensax in the neighboring community of Mountain Forest.
