Gan (Addu Atoll)

Gan ( Dhivehi: ގ ަ ނ ް ) is the southernmost island of the Maldives. It belongs to Addu Atoll, the southernmost, just a little south of the equator lying atoll of the Maldives.

Geography

Gan Iceland is, like the other islands of the Maldives, the delimitation in the IHO Lakkadivensee. With its south-east coast west of the southern tip but the island is bordered by the Arabian Sea. At its most southern point of the Arabian Sea, the Lakkadivensee the east and the open Indian Ocean in the south push in the west, to each other.

Gan Iceland has an international airport ( IATA: GAN, ICAO code: VRMG ).

History and Overview

Gan was formerly base of the British Air Force Royal Air Force (RAF Gan ), and served mainly as a stopover for aircraft en route to Singapore. From Gan Iceland as well as numerous missiles were launched Kookaburra.

A special feature of Addu Atoll is the ability to move on land via dams between the islands of the atoll. The inhabitants, particularly the women who work predominantly in textile processing, or on other atolls in the tourism sector, which is why fathers often do not see their families for a long time, since travel to and from work tedious and in terms of local incomes are correspondingly expensive.

The former officer of the British property on Gan was converted into a resort Equator Village. Unlike other such systems, it is limited to Gan, however, only part of the local development. On Gan is one example ordinary shops selling everyday items, a small mosque and a post office. Even native Maldivian live directly on Gan. Presumably they inhabit buildings were formerly barracks of the British. On a neighboring island you will find a more typical settlement, densely built with small, very spartan huts.
