Gangara, Tanout

Region

Gangara is a rural municipality in the department of Tanout in Niger.

Geography

Gangara lies in the Sahel. The neighboring municipalities are Tarka the northwest, Tanout in the northeast, southeast and Falenko Olléléwa in the south. The municipality is divided into 135 administrative villages, 184 traditional villages, 289 hamlets, 25 warehouses and 42 water points. The main town of the rural community is the administrative village Gangara.

History

From 1907 to 1912, a French military command was in place. 1915 sparked the French administration Gangara out as a separate Canton from Canton Tanout. The Canton line was transferred to a local dynasty sedentary Tuareg. The rural community Gangara went out in 2002 as part of a nationwide administrative reform from the Canton Gangara, its southern part was separated as an independent country Falenko community.

Population

At the 2001 census Gangara had 88 670 inhabitants. For the year 2010 116.762 inhabitants were calculated. In Gangara relatives living of the ethnic groups of the Tuareg, Hausa and Fulani. The Hausa subgroups Gobirawa and Damagarawa operate mainly agriculture. The Fulbe subgroup Tchilanko'en specializes in Agropastoralismus. Especially remote pasture practice the Fulani subgroups Oudah'en and Wodaabe and the Tuareg subgroups Imouzgou, Imouzwagan, Iwillimiden, Ates Kel, Kel Nougroub, Kel Tanat and Tegama. Finally, still living members of the Tuareg subgroups Albourdatan and araban in the rural community, representing their main livelihood of the caravan trade.
