Gangi, Sicily

Gangi is a city in the province of Palermo in the Italian region Sicily, with 6993 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Gangi is located 125 km southeast of Palermo in the Madonie. The inhabitants mainly work in agriculture.

The neighboring municipalities are Alimena Blufi, Bompietro, Calascibetta (EN), Enna (EN), Geraci Siculo, Nicosia (EN), Petralia Soprana and Sperlinga (DE).

History

The present town was founded in the 14th century. The old village was destroyed in 1299.

On January 1, 1926 Gangi was the scene of a large deployment of police and carabinieri, led by Cesare Mori against the Brigantenbanden and the Cosa Nostra, who had set up in Gangi.

Events

  • The procession in honor of Spirito Santo (Holy Spirit) is the biggest festival in the Madonie; it takes place on Whit Monday.
  • The ears Festival ( Sagra della Spiga ) takes place on the second Sunday in August.
