Basalt prisms on the southeast slope of the mountain Gangolf

The Gangolf mountain is 736 m above sea level. NN high mountain in the Rhön, in Bavaria ( Germany ), who is mainly known for its basalt columns.

Geographical location

The Gangolf mountain is about 3.7 km northwest of the resort town Oberelsbach in the Bavarian Rhön Nature Park. About 3 km north-east is the Rother knoll, about 1 km to the east is the Schweinfurt house.

Mountain Description

On the Gangolf mountain there is a rampart. On the steep drop in the southeast slope of the path at one of the best preserved basalt prism walls of the Rhön passes. The basalt columns stand here since the second raising of the Rhön in the late Tertiary oblique to horizontal. Even the Wegbefestigung and steps are made of basalt prisms.

The mountain is mostly covered with deciduous mixed forest.
