Gangotri Glacier

The Gangotri Glacier is a Glacier in the Indian state of Uttarakhand, which counts with an estimated volume of over 27 cubic kilometers of the largest glaciers in the Himalayas. He is about 30 km long and 2-4 km wide.

He springs from the Bhagirathi, one of the headwaters of the Ganges. The glacier is due to its former appearance of Hindus Gaumukh (about: " mouth of the cow " ) called. The Gangotri glacier can be reached on foot from the same place in one day.

In recent years, a significant decline in glacier mass can be observed: In the past 25 years, he has lost more than 850 m in length.
