History

The company founder Bernard Gant, a Ukrainian, was in 1914 as an immigrant to New York. He got his first job in a shirt store in Manhattan, where he stitched collars. There he met his future wife.

Founded in 1941, Bernard Gant, along with his cousin, the family Gant in New Haven. They worked on sub-suppliers - base and selling their quality shirts with the leading brands in the country. The hallmark of Gant was a "g " in the corner of the shirt and was very popular with customers. So they preferred to the "g -Shirt" buy, rather than the actual brand. After the Second World War increased Bernards sons Elliot (1946) and Marty (1948 ) in the family business.

1949, they launched their own brand Gant, to no longer be working as a subcontractor. They also created a new same design: buttons on the collars. This was a " button- down shirt" known and a bestseller. Thus, the request went to Gant Shirts rapidly and after a year they have been sold throughout the United States. In the 1960s, Gant was temporarily the second largest shirt manufacturer in the world.

1967 sold the Gant family, the company which was then extended to various American corporations. Due to the huge success of the entrepreneurs saw one that could restrict the sale not only in the U.S. and in 1980 was awarded the Swedish company Pyramid Sportswear license to bring their own collection of the Gant brand on the market. First, the sale was limited to Sweden, but a short time later Pyramid expanded the label worldwide - but not in the USA. For the American market the shirt maker Phillips - Van Heusen in 1995 had acquired the rights to the brand Gant. For 20 years there was a great appreciation for the collection of Pyramid Sportswear, an entire sportswear collection developed from the "g -Shirt". 1999 bought the Swedes then the U.S. brand, as the U.S. precursor was completely overrun by the international collection. Ironically, Pyramid, however, had already opened a flagship store on New York's Fifth Avenue in 1997.
