Garda, Veneto

Garda is a town with 4003 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Verona, on the western edge of the Veneto region. Garda is located on the eastern shore and is the namesake of the Lake Garda. In and around the village there are a sumptuous, almost Mediterranean vegetation. Therefore, it is a popular tourist destination on the lake. Garda is dominated by the lake and the small harbor with the " Palazzo dei Capitani " from the Venetian period.

In the vicinity of the Garda promontory Punta San Vigilio projects into the lake. For the philosopher Agostino di Brenzone it was the " most beautiful place in the world". Today this place is privately owned, the use of the beach " Baia delle Sirene " is chargeable.

History

Remains of pile dwellings are evidence of a very early settlement. Is guaranteed that here Theodoric, king of the Goths in the 5th century a castle - the Rocca di Garda - was built on a plateau high above the town. It was long considered impregnable - even the Emperor Barbarossa failed to take them. In the medieval literature, this castle was called " Ze garden ", eg "the garden ". Five centuries later, there was here the Langobardenfürst Berengar II until he defeated the Great of King Otto and was imprisoned for life in Bamberg. The castle was destroyed in the 16th century by the Venetians.

From 1904 until final closure in 1956 the city had a station on the railway line Verona-Caprino/Garda.

Origin of the name

Presumably, the name derives from the Germanic Garda waiting. Originally this meant the medieval castle that once stood on the rock. This fort was ultimately the entire lake its name, in Latin Lacus Benaco. The village was originally called Garda Garda plana.
