Garden Ring

The Garden Ring or Ring " B " (Russian Садовое кольцо or кольцо " Б " / Sadowoje Kolzo Kolzo or "B ") is an approximately 17 km long ring road in the center of Moscow.

Moscow was once surrounded by several defenses. One of these was the embankment (Russian Земляной вал ). After the fire of 1812 the city began to spread. The rampart was removed and filled the adjacent moat. The resulting space between the buildings were in a wide paved road with sidewalks converted (total width less than 25 m) and gardens ( hence the name Garden Ring ) and boulevards were created.

In 1870 tracks were laid for a horse railway, which in 1908 replaced by modern trams. The tram line on the Garden Ring was named B ( " Б "). 1936 to 1937 the trams were replaced by trolleybuses. In the early 1950s, the circle line ( Кольцевая линия ) was taken of the Moscow Metro in operation, the southern part follows the course of the Garden Ring. In the 1960s, the Garden Ring to the city highway was built, pedestrian underpasses and road tunnel to replace most of the existing traffic lights until then. In some places, however, exist to this day level at-grade intersections and even pedestrian traffic lights, so that the garden ring is no highway in the classical sense.

At the Great Sadowaja Street, a part of the Garden Ring road, the under preservation Hotel Beijing, a building in the style of Socialist Classicism is.
