Gardnar Mulloy

Gardnar Putnam Mulloy ( born November 22, 1913 in Washington, DC ) is a retired American professional tennis player.

Biography

Mulloy dominated in the 1940s with his doubles partner and compatriot William Talbert the men's doubles tournaments at the U.S. Championships. He won this Grand Slam tournament four times (1942, 1945, 1946, 1948). Almost ten years later, he won in 1957, together with the Americans Budge Patty at Wimbledon.

The Americans won five titles in the men's doubles, and was further nine times in a final. In 1952, he drew a single time in a singles final at the U.S. Championships, but it lost to the Australian Frank Sedgman.

Gardnar Mulloy played 14 games for the American Davis Cup team and won 11 matches for itself. His record is 11-3. In 1972, the induction into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy and conducted landing operations in North Africa and Europe.
