Garibald I of Bavaria

Garibald I. (* 500, † to 593 ) was probably the first known of the Bavarians Duke in Bavaria.

Life

Garibald was an early representative of the Agilolfinger, a significant and leading dynasty without having been able to clarify how this dynasty comes from and who were the parents Garibald. In part, it is assumed that a close relationship with the Merovingians - the Fredegar Chronicle reported that he was Frankish origin -, others call a Theodosius II or Agiwald of Meaux as a father, the latter a son of Agilolf of Meaux, but also a connection to Lombard rulers or Suebenfürsten Agilulf is considered possible. Eben This Agilulf said to have been named after the Agilolfinger. Given these uncertainties, it is also unclear whether the Bavarians had a Duke before Garibald. The acquisition of land or ethnogenesis of the Bavarians falls at least in the first half of the 6th century. The occasionally called " Dukes " Theodon I., Theodon II and III Theodon. likely, however, belong rather to the realm of legend.

To 548 Garibald received the title of duke of Bavaria by the Frankish king Theudebald; at 555, he married Walderada, the daughter Wachos, king of the Lombards (about 510-540 ). She was the king of Austrasia Theudebalds widow and the Frankish king Clotaire then the woman was I, because of religious opposition but had to part with her, and she now was " one of his " just the Duke of Bavaria for his wife. This marriage meant a considerable rank increase for Duke Garibald. Contemporary sources Lombard titled him instead dux ( duke ) as rex (king). Apparently Duke had Garibald have perceived in Bavaria for the Merovingian kingdom a key position.

The domestic difficulties of the Frankish king offered soon Garibald opportunity to own, refined policy in alliance with the engaged in Italy in 568 the Lombards, which connected him an interest in the Verona-Brenner- route. He married a daughter of the Lombard Duke Ewin ( Eoin ) of Trent, which is about the same time ( 575 ) attacked by the Franks. This is an indication that the Lombard sought to protect themselves by an alliance with its northern neighbor against similar Frankish attacks.

When the Franks again threatened by the Lombards in 584, the new Lombard King Authari closed after he had failed with the Franks, the understanding, the Bavarians on. Apparently led Garibald approach to the Lombards to the fact that the Franks vorgingen military in the year 589 against him, at least fled this year the children Theodolinda and Gundoald to Italy to the Lombards: Garibald daughter Theodolinda married because she had been spurned by the Frankish king, of the Lombard king Authari; Garibald son Gundoald is Duke of Asti and as a father King Ariperts I. ancestor and progenitor of the agilolfingischen Longobard kings. This created an anti- Frankish alliance of the Lombard king with the Bavarian Duke and the Duke of Asti and Trento. The following year, 590, ended a Frankish attack on Autharis area with a heavy Frankish defeat.

Subsequently, in the year 591, however, was an understanding of the Franks with the Lombards, the consequences for the early Bavarians are severe, as can be seen from the same time took place in Bavaria change of rulers, the country for the first time as a function of the Franks seems to show: Garibald died or was deposed by the Merovingian king. Paul the Deacon reported that now Tassilo has been used by the Frankish king Childebert about Bavaria as rex (king). Tassilo I. was either Garibald son or a close relative.
