Garm Hava Garam Hawa also (Hindi: गर्म हवा garma HAVA, English: Hot Winds or Scorching Winds ) is a Hindi film directed by MS Sathyu from 1973 Balraj Sahni with in the lead role. The film is based on an unpublished short story writer Ismat Chughtai. From the Internet newspaper india times the film has been selected in the Top 25 Must See Bollywood Movies. Internationally, the film attracted attention and was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the International Film Festival of Cannes.

Action

1947 after the Partition of India: The Muslim Family Mirza lives in Agra. The eldest son Halim is to Karachi, Pakistan, emigrated because he hoped there as a politician a better future. Not so the younger brother Salim, who refuses to leave his small Schuster company and his home. Salim's eldest son Baqar supported him in the business activities, while the younger son Sikandar is nearing completion of his studies. The only daughter, Amina, is engaged to her cousin Kazim, whom she wants to get married soon.

But the stars are not good for the family. Business is bad and Salim are not granted a loan to bridge the current crisis. This is due to the relocation of many Muslims to Pakistan, who have not paid their debt to the banks. To survive, Salim has no other choice than to sell the house. After a long search they move into a rented apartment, which Salim's mother almost breaks your heart.

Baqar could not watch as his father's business goes down the drain. He decides to Pakistan with his wife and son in tow.

For Amina marital happiness seems far away, because Halim wants to marry his son Kazim with the daughter of a Pakistani politician. Well it can be but on a Shamshad, who courts her all the time. However, Shamshads family moved soon after Pakistan. Although he promises to marry her, he can not keep the promise. Amina can not endure until she finally takes the life of this suffering.

Sikanders future also promises no great hopes. Despite his passing exams, he can not find work. Each interview will be advised him to try his luck in Pakistan.

After all the humiliation and Salim now wants to leave the country. Only Sikander not want to give up and wants to face the problems. On the way to the station, they get into a demonstration, which also wanted to participate Sikander. They all protest against unemployment and discrimination. Salim Sikander will not stop them, while he orders his driver to take his wife back home. He gets out of the carriage and participates to finally break free from isolation and to see the new reality in the face in the demonstration with the words.
