Garrard County, Kentucky

Garrard County is a county located in the state of Kentucky in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Lancaster, which was named after the town in Pennsylvania. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Geography

The County is located east of the geographic center of Kentucky and has an area of 606 square kilometers, of which seven square kilometers of water surface.

It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Jessamine County, Madison County, Rockcastle County, Lincoln County, Boyle County and Mercer County.

History

Garrard County was formed on December 17, 1796 from parts of Lincoln County, Madison County and Mercer County. It was named after Governor James Garrard.

Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of Uncle Tom's Cabin visited to gather material for her book the Kennedy estate in Garrard County. The former hut was a little off and was destroyed in 1926. Later, the officials of the county at the country residence of Governor William Owsley planned to build the hut again.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Garrard County 14 792 people in 5,741 households and 4,334 families. The population density was 25 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 95.75 percent White, 3.06 percent African American, 0.13 percent Native American, 0.04 percent Asian, and 0.43 percent from other races; 0.59 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.32 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 5,741 households out of which 33.4 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 62.6 percent were married couples living together, 9.4 percent were single mothers, 24.5 percent were non-families, 21.1 percent of all households and 9.5 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 2.95 persons.

Based on the county the population was spread from 24.4 percent population under 18 years, 8.1 percent between 18 and 24 years, 30.9 percent between 25 and 44 years, 23.6 percent between 45 and 64 years and 13.0 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 96.8 males. For every 100 females aged 18 years old or over, there were 93.0 men statistically.

The median income for a household was $ 34,284, and the median income for a family was $ 41,250. Males have a median income of $ 30,989, women $ 21,856. The per capita income was $ 16,915. 11.6 percent of families and 14.7 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 19.1 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 17.0 percent of those 65 years.
