Garret Hobart

Garret Augustus Hobart ( born June 3, 1844 in Long Branch, New Jersey, † November 21, 1899 in Paterson, New Jersey ) was an American politician and from 1897 until his death, the 24th Vice President of the United States.

Curriculum vitae

Hobart was born in 1844 in Long Branch, the son of Addison and Sophia Hobart and grew up in Marlboro Township, New Jersey. He attended Rutgers University and graduated in 1863 his degree as a lawyer. He also was a member of the fraternity Delta Phi.

1871 Hobart City Council was in Paterson. From 1872 to 1876 he was a deputy in the New Jersey General Assembly, from 1874 on, he served as the Speaker of the Parliament chamber. From 1876 to 1882 he was a member of the Senate of New Jersey, from 1881 he was its chairman. In 1883 he ran for the U.S. Senate, but was defeated by Democrat John Rhoderic McPherson.

In the primaries of the Republican Party of 1896 he was nominated as a candidate for the office of Vice-President and, after William McKinley was elected president, vice-president. This office he stepped on 4 March 1897. During his tenure, his wife Jennie Tuttle Hobart often assumed the duties of the First Lady as the president's wife, Ida McKinley, suffered from epileptic seizures.

Death

Hobart served until his sudden death on 21 November 1899 in this office. He died of heart failure and was buried at Cedar Lawn Cemetery in Paterson. The post of Vice President remained vacant after his death, before following after the presidential election this Theodore Roosevelt took office.
