Garretson W. Gibson

Garretson Wilmot Gibson ( born May 20, 1832 in Maryland, † April 26, 1910 ) was of 11 December 1900 to 4 January 1904, the President of Liberia.

His family emigrated in 1835 to Liberia. There he was educated in mission schools. He then returned to Maryland to study theology. Appointed as a priest, he then worked as rector of the Episcopalian Three Holiness Church in Monrovia. He was 1892-1896 President of Liberia College.

With the election of William D. Coleman as president in 1896 Gibson was appointed Minister of the Interior. At Coleman's resignation in 1900, he was Secretary of State, and there was no Vice President, Gibson was chosen as his successor. He won the elections in the same year and was until 1904 the office before then his secretary for finance, Arthur Barclay, replaced him.
