Garrey Carruthers

Garrey Edward Carruthers ( born August 29, 1939 in Alamosa, Colorado ) is an American politician. He was from 1987 to 1991 Governor of the State of New Mexico.

Early years

Garrey Carruthers was born in Colorado and grew up in Aztec (New Mexico). There he studied at the New Mexico State University until 1965 agriculture. He then continued his studies until 1968 at Iowa State University. Upon completion of this course he taught himself the trade agriculture at New Mexico State University.

Political career

Carruthers is a member of the Republican Party. Between 1974 and 1975 he worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. From 1975 to 1978 he worked in New Mexico at the Institute for the study of water resources in this country ( Water Resources Research Institute). Between 1977 and 1979 he was also chairman of his party in New Mexico. After the election of Ronald Reagan and the associated power of the Republicans in Washington Carruthers received between 1981 and 1984 employment in the U.S. Department of Interior.

In 1986 Garrey Carruthers was then elected as the new governor of his state. He took up his new post on 1 January 1987. As a supporter of the death penalty, he led them back into New Mexico. His predecessor, Toney Anaya, an opponent of the death penalty, had converted many death sentences in other penalties shortly before the end of his term. Otherwise, his term was uneventful.

After the end of his term Carruthers from 1993 to 2003, President and CEO of " Cimmaron Health Plan " health insurance. Since June 2008 he is on the board of First State Bankcorporation that in New Mexico, Colorado, Utah and Arizona is mainly business.
