Gartner is a provider that offers market research and analysis on the developments in IT.

Gartner was founded in 1979 by Gideon Gartner - then known as Gartner Group. 2001, the name of the company in Gartner has changed. Since the establishment Gartner has taken over 25 companies in its core business and research in related fields. The company employs in the year 2008, approximately 4,400 employees, of whom 650 analysts and 550 consultants, and achieved an annual turnover of 1.3 billion U.S. dollars. According to information Gartner works with over 45,000 clients in 10,000 organizations in 75 countries.

The company is comprised of four business units Gartner Research, Gartner Executive Programs, Gartner Consulting and Gartner Events and headquartered in Stamford (Connecticut), USA.

Gartner continues to visualize the results of the market analysis a so-called hype cycles and Magic Quadrants. Hype cycles indicates which phases of public attention by running a new technology in their introduction. Magic Quadrants show how certain vendors to position themselves according to Gartner defined criteria within this market. The positioning is done in one of four quadrants: Leader, Visionary, Challenger and niche players.
