Gary Anderson (cyclist)

Gary John Anderson ( born September 18, 1967 in London, United Kingdom) is a former New Zealand racing cyclist and current cycling coach.

Gary Anderson was born in London; when he was nine years old, emigrated with his family to New Zealand. His father had been a cyclist and trained him initially. 1985 Anderson was at the Junior Track World Championships third in the individual pursuit. In 1986, he competed at the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh and won four medals: two silver respectively in the 1000 -meter time trial and the team pursuit ( with Stephen Cox, Stephen Swart and Andrew Whitford ) and two bronze respectively in the individual pursuit and over ten miles. Four years later, at the Commonwealth Games in Auckland, he won four more medals, three gold in the pursuit, team pursuit and ten miles, and a silver medal in the time trial. His third participation in Commonwealth Games 1998 in Kuala Lumpur, failed because he badly crashed shortly before; instead, he commented on the competitions for the New Zealand television.

Four times started Anderson at the Olympic Games. In 1992 he won the bronze medal in the pursuit.

1987 Gary Anderson won the Tour of Gastown in Canada and the 1993 Tour of Somerville in the USA. In 2000 he was third in the New Zealand Championship in the time trial.

Anderson reached all these successes, although he has a congenital heart defect. Today he works as a coach. In 2006 he was admitted Sports Hall of Fame in New Zealand.
