Gary Crosby (bassist)

Gary Crosby ( born January 26, 1955 in London ) is a British bass player of modern jazz. He is regarded as one of the leading bassists in the country.

Life and work

Crosby, a nephew of Ernest Ranglin, received first since the age of thirteen trumpet lessons before he moved to the bass; From 1974 he took lessons with Peter Ind.

He first played with Ed Bentley and Ray Carless. In the early 1980s he was a founding member of the Big Band Jazz Warriors. Since then he has toured with Courtney Pine, Steve Williamson, Orphy Robinson or Denys Baptiste through Europe, but also occurred with itinerant musicians such as Larry Coryell, Art Farmer, Gary Bartz and Sonny Fortune. He leads his band Nu Troop and Jazz Jamaica (including the Jazz Jamaica All Stars ), with whom he has played in international festivals. In 1991 he founded the Tomorrow's Warriors that serve the training of young scientists, and in 1997 the label Dune Records. He also took up with John Stevens.

Prizes and awards

In 2007 he was awarded for his contribution to the jazz a BBC Jazz Award; for his contribution to the harmonious music of Jamaica, he was accepted at the 2002 Ocho Rios Jazz Festival in Jamaica, the Hall Of Fame. In 2009 he was awarded for his musical achievements with the Order of the British Empire.
