Gary Franks

Gary A. Franks ( born February 9, 1953 in Waterbury, Connecticut ) is an American politician. Between 1991 and 1997 he represented the state of Connecticut in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Gary Franks attended the Yale University until 1975. He became a member of the Republican Party. Between 1986 and 1990 he was a member of the City Council of Waterbury. In 1986 he applied unsuccessfully for the post of the head of the Court of Connecticut.

In the congressional elections of 1990, Frank was in the fifth electoral district of his state in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of John G. Rowland on January 3, 1991. After two re- election he was able to complete in Congress until January 3, 1997 three legislative periods. In the 1996 elections, he was defeated by Democrat James H. Maloney. Franks was since 1932 the first African American to be elected for the Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives; Oscar Stanton De Priest this time succeeded in the state of Illinois. In addition to JC Watts of Oklahoma Frank's was in the 1990s, the only African-American Congressman of the Republicans.

In 1998, Frank ran unsuccessfully against incumbent Chris Dodd for the U.S. Senate.
