Gary Shteyngart

Gary Shteyngart (* Igor Shteyngart in 1972 in Leningrad) is an American culture journalist and writer of Russian origin.

Life

He emigrated with his Jewish- Russian parents at the age of seven years to Queens, New York City. After he spent some time in Prague in the early 1990s, he studied at Oberlin College political science. He then worked for various non-profit organizations in New York.

His debut as a novelist The Russian Debutante's Handbook (2002) he finished in Baku, Azerbaijan. There, the author researched the same time for his second novel snack Daddys adventurous journey ( 2006 to German in Berlin Verlag, Berlin, in the original 2006 Absurdistan, Random House, New York). It plays a 147 -pound rapper named Misha "Snack Daddy" Vainberg the role of a tragicomic Jonah. In 2010 his book Super Sad True Love Story was published by Granta. The German translation appeared in 2011.

As a travel and culture journalist Shteyngart published in The New Yorker, among other things, the British literary magazine Granta, in The New York Times and the lifestyle magazine Travel & Leisure. Shteyngart lives in New York City.

Gary Shteyngart in 2007 was a Fellow at the American Academy in Berlin in the autumn.
