Gary Sutton

Gary John Sutton ( born March 27, 1955 in Sydney ) is an Australian former racing cyclist.

1974 Gary Sutton won two silver medals at the Commonwealth Games in Christchurch, New Zealand, one in the individual pursuit and one in the team pursuit. The following year he became an Australian Master of the Amateurs in the road race. In the Commonwealth Games 1978 he won a gold medal in the Team Pursuit ( with Colin Fitzgerald, Shane Sutton and Kevin Nichols ). In 1980 he became world champion in the points race for amateurs. 1981 Sutton took the second place in the overall standings of the Eastern Swiss tour. Twice - in 1976 in the individual pursuit and team pursuit in 1980 - he competed at the Olympics and both times took sixth.

In 1982, Gary Sutton pro, after he became vice-champion in the points race for amateurs, in 1983, he finished at the Track World Championships in the same discipline as a professional third. In 1984 and 1989 he was again each World Cup runner-up in the points race. Four times started Gary Sutton also in Six Days, 1983, he won the Melbourne along with his brother Shane. On the road it was mainly at domestic races successfully, such as in 1985 when he won the Canberra Tour.

In 1991, Sutton returned from active cycling and began working as a coach. He has worked as a coach for the Australian Cycling Federation today. He was awarded the Order of Australia (OAM ).

Gary Sutton is the father of cyclist Chris Sutton.
