The GTL (gas -to-liquids ) is a process for producing synthetic fuels for diesel engines.

Process Description

When GTL Natural gas is converted by the supply of oxygen and steam to syngas, and this in a Fischer- Tropsch synthesis to hydrocarbons. The major portion of the product mixture from the Fischer- Tropsch synthesis is made of long chain waxy normal paraffins, which must be first converted by cracking and isomerization in a special hydrocracker ( and subsequent fractionation) into liquid hydrocarbons. Main product of the cracking process is a fuel for diesel engines.

Properties

The obtained colorless and odorless liquid is completely sulfur-free and contains no aromatic compounds or organic nitrogen. In addition, this product of other excellent properties ( low density, high cetane number ).

The exhaust emissions in the use of synthetic fuels are better than with conventional diesel fuels. GTL fuels require no modifications to the engine.

Application

GTL fuel is intended to serve as a diesel fuel substitute or admixture. As a trading name of synfuel term was coined.

Currently, there is a small GTL production (after the so-called SMDS process, see below) by Shell in Malaysia, whose emissions of the fuel brand V-Power Diesel is mixed. Shell led the V-Power diesel one end June 2004. Shell V-Power is to contain 5% GTL share and additional additives.

World leader in the field of GTL technology is the South African Sasol Ltd.. , The GTL facilities in South Africa and has, together with Chevron in Qatar.

A new GTL technology comes from Russia: the so-called HTR ( High Temperature Reactor ) technology - this works with at least 40 % higher efficiency than Fischer- Tropsch synthesis and is of synfuel Technology Ltd.. marketed since 2007. The worldwide patent rights have been secured. Currently, several HTR plants are planned or under construction.

The chemical and physical properties similar to those of the part produced by choirs in Germany until their insolvency test basis BtL fuel SunDiesel.
