Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos

Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos ( born January 5, 1744 Gijón, † November 27, 1811 in Vega, Asturias) was a Spanish statesman, political writer and poet of the Spanish Enlightenment.

Don Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos ( pron. chhowelljanos ), actually Jove - Llanos, was destined for the clergy, but resigned in 1767 in the Ministry of Justice and became a member of the Spanish Academy and of Charles III. appointed to the State Council.

His opposition as scouts against the shortcomings of the legislation, police, etc. in his own country drew him to exile in Asturias in 1790, where he worked tirelessly for the improvement of the welfare of the country. In 1797 he was appointed by Manuel de Godoy to the Minister of Justice and Mercy things; alone in 1798 he retired to escape the risks associated with that poisoning attempts to Gijon back, was banished at the instigation Godoy 1801 in a Carthusian Monastery in Mallorca and brought in 1802 in the state prison to Bellver.

But still he only met ingratitude and persecution.

Work

His tragedy El Pelayo (1799 ) deals with the history of the Gotenhelden who claimed against the Moors. A collection of his works concerned Canedo (Madrid 1830-32 ) and Nocedal (Vol. 46 and 50 of the Biblioteca de autores españoles, Madrid 1858-59 ). His oraciones y Discursos published in a special edition (Madrid, 1880).
