Gaspar Sanz

Gaspar Sanz (actually Francisco Bartolome Sanz Celma; * unknown; baptized on 4 April 1640 Calanda, † 1710 in Madrid) was a Spanish composer and guitarist of the Baroque.

Life and effect

Sanz studied music, theology and philosophy at the University of Salamanca. Guitar he learned in Naples, where he worked as an organist at the royal court. In 1674 he published the first major textbook for baroque guitar, the " de música sobre la guitarra Instrucción española y de sus primeros Métodos rudimentos hasta Taner con destreza " which he later added two more times. The work teaches music theory and playing techniques, and contains about 90 arrangements of Spanish dances and Italian melodies.

1954 wrote the Spanish composer Joaquín Rodrigo at the suggestion of guitarist Andrés Segovia in the series of very successful " Fantasia para un gentilhombre " for guitar and orchestra on themes of Sanz, who had this written for his pupil Juan José de Austria, an illegitimate son of Philip IV
