Gasparo Tagliacozzi

Gaspare Tagliacozzi (* 1546 in Bologna, † November 7, 1599 ) was an Italian surgeon and anatomist.

Life

Tagliacozzi studied at the University of Bologna under Gerolamo Cardano, in 1570 he received his doctorate.

In the late 14th century, the Sicilian family Branca ( Branca the Elder and his son Antonio Branca ) developed a surgical alternative to Indian rhinoplasty, the pedicled Armlappen ( spacer tab ). The rhinoplasty was in those times mainly in duel or war-related mutilations and the disintegration of the syphilitic nose application. Six sub- operations and a total of 3-4 months requiring, nose was formed as a pedicled distant flaps plastic from the skin of the inner side of the upper arm, as it had been similarly described more than 100 years before him Henry of Pfalzpaint. 1586 mentioned first time in a letter ( printed later ), the technique of Tagliacozzi was published as the first in 1597 in printed form, thus attaining to the general public and became known as Italian method. It is still performed under the name flap surgery in a modified form and application to cover soft tissue defects as a groin flap. Tagliacozzi also described the restoration of mutilated ears and lips ( lip plastic) and is therefore regarded as a pioneer of plastic surgery in Europe, even if he is not the inventor of the methods.
