Gaston Dethier

Gaston Dethier (* 1875 in Liege, † 1958) was an American organist and composer of Belgian origin.

Life

Dethier was the eldest of seven sons of the composition teacher at the Conservatoire of Liège Emile Detier. He was organ pupil of Alexandre Guilmant and was eleven years old organist at St. Jacques. At the Conservatory of Liege, he received first prizes in organ, piano, harmony and fugue.

At the age of 19 he came to the United States. By 1907 he was organist at St. Xavier in New York. 1905 brought him Frank Damrosch as an organ teacher at the New York Institute of Musical Art After leaving Carl Friedberg 1918, he was also a piano teacher.

His organ pieces Christmas and Aria were known (1899 ). One of his brothers was the violinist Edouard Detier.
