Gastown

Gastown is a historic district in downtown Vancouver. The name comes from British settlers John " Gassy Jack" Deighton, who in 1867 opened the first restaurant here. The most famous landmark of the district is a steam clock. The town grew rapidly as a saw mill and a seaport settled. It quickly became a commercial and financial center.

On April 6, 1886 Gastown became a city and became the " City of Vancouver ". Only two months later, in June 1886, the city was victim of the Great Fire of Vancouver, the only two buildings survived in Gastown. It took until the 1920s before the place was again completely built.

In 2009, Gastown was added to the list of National Historic Sites of Canada.
