Shiny dagger worm ( Zonitoides nitidus )

The dagger snails ( Gastrodontidae ) are a family from the suborder of terrestrial snails ( gastropod ). The forms have a dagger-like love arrow, which derives its German name.

Features

The housings are low spirally wound with broad, flattened coils. The housings are usually smooth or ribbed parallel to growth. The mouth is usually simple, rarely with a basal tooth or a basal lamina. The housings are usually small (a few millimeters to about 1 cm in diameter). The creeping is often divided longitudinally into two halves, which are separated with a shallow median longitudinal furrow; less commonly divided into three parts. The penis has internally a lime platelets ( may be reduced in some groups ) and an ancillary part with a dagger-like love arrow ( missing in some species of the genus Striatura ).

Occurrence and life

The family is widespread Holarctic. It also occurs in Central America, the Canary Islands and Madeira. The animals usually live near water.

The dagger snails ( Gastrodontidae ) family is the Nominatfamilie the superfamily Gastrodontoidea. The family is divided by Schleyko (2003) in the two subfamilies Gastrodontinae and Nastiinae Riedel, 1986.
