History

The present village was not until the mid -18th century, but there are around structures which are significantly older. In the vicinity there is for example a fortified tower house dating from the 15th century. The first building in the city is a former warehouse and today's hotel, which was built in 1765. Originally, the " Gait house" was just a post on the important route to Port Patrick and Ireland, however, developed by 1850 into a prosperous location of the cotton processing. 1795 already four cotton mills, a brass foundry, a brewery, a soap factory, a tannery and twice as many inhabitants as had settled today. The reason for this development can be found in the vicinity of the hole Whinyeon, because from there the water was purchased for the mill for the spinning mills.
