Gates County, North Carolina

Gates County is a county located in the state of North Carolina of the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Gatesville.

Geography

The County is located in northeastern North Carolina, bounded on the north Virginia and has an area of 895 square kilometers, of which 13 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Camden County, Pasquotank County, Perquimans County, Chowan County and Hertford County.

Gates County is divided into seven townships: Gatesville, Hall, Haslett, Holly Grove, Hunters Mill, Mintonsville and Reynoldson.

History

Gates County was formed in 1778 from parts of Chowan County, Hertford County and Perquimans County. It was named, as is the district capital of Gatesville, according to Horatio Gates, a commanding general of the U.S. Army at the Battle of Saratoga.
