Gates Scholarship

The Gates Cambridge Scholarships were established as an honorary scholarship from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in 2000 with an endowment value of 210 million U.S. dollars. Outstanding students all over the world (excluding the United Kingdom) should be made possible by these grants to be able to carry out postgraduate studies at the University of Cambridge ( for one year to a maximum of three or four years).

Approximately 100 new Gates Scholars are selected each year ( of which about 40 % from the U.S.). The selection criteria are rigorous and include excellent academic and intellectual achievements, leadership potential and commitment through talent and knowledge, on the other to improve the living conditions. The stated goal of the Foundation is to create a "network of future leaders " that spans the world and global issues involved (such as social inequality, health, technology or learning).

Although much younger, the Gates Scholarships in goal the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship at Oxford University are similar.
