Gatien de Courtilz de Sandras

Gatien de Courtilz de Sandras (* 1644 in Montargis, † 8 May 1712 in Paris) was a French Musketeer and writer. He was known primarily for his biography of d'Artagnan, who later Alexandre Dumas the Elder The Three Musketeers served as a template for his adventure novel.

Life

At the age of 26, he embarked on a military career, which he finished in 1688 as a captain ( Hauptmann ) in the Régiment d' infantry de Champagne. He then went to the Netherlands and has published numerous papers, mostly historical novels and pamphlets. During this time Courtilz was imprisoned for his publications several times, most recently he spent nine years from 1702 in the Bastille.

Subject matter and style

Numerous information about d' Artagnan, he received during a stay in the Bastille, which was at this time of Besmaux, a former companion of the legendary Musketeer managed.

Coutilz authored multiple foreign biographies in the first person, such as the Marquis de Montbrun or Monsieur de Rochefort, for which he was severely criticized.
