Gatsby (Sandwich)
As Gatsby ( based on the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald ) is called a popular sandwich in South Africa.
Gatsby consist of lengthwise cut large rolls ( a French baguette very similar, except it is wider and softer) that are filled with various fillings. During the filling of a Gatsby can vary widely, are the basic elements are always freshly made, still warm chips and spicy sauce ( masala ).
The fillings used on häuftigsten are meat from chicken, pork steak, Polony ( a Würstchenart ), Vienna sausages, squid and fish in general and steak on the charcoal grill.
Gatsby have their origin in the Cape Flats ( a flat, sandy area south-east of Cape Town Centre; Township ) from Cape Town. There, people who bought the large baguette loaves and often filled with what they had to residues in the home. This " Great Gatsby " was often cut into four pieces. This practice has survived to this day, there are still "half Gatspies " or " quarter Gatsby " are sold.
