Gattilusi

The Gattilusio were an influential medieval patrician family from Genoa. Middle of the 14th century succeeded Francesco I Gattilusio by its close ties to the Byzantine Emperor to come to the regional power in the Aegean. The emperor granted him and his heirs the rule of the island of Lesbos. In the following decades the Gattilusio been able to extend their power to Ainos, Lemnos, Thasos, Samothrace and Phocaea, where they founded Genoese colonies. Through marriage policy, the connections to the Byzantine imperial family and the Christian Nobility of the Mediterranean were consolidated. With the rise of the Ottomans in the 15th century, the Gattilusio lost their possessions and their influence in the Aegean Sea. 1462 was the last possession, the island of Lesbos, where in 1355 the rule of the Gattilusio had begun, lost to the Ottomans.
