The Gaussberg ( internationalized also Gaussberg ) is an extinct volcano on the coast of the Southern Ocean ( Davissee ) in the Kaiser Wilhelm II Land in Antarctica. He is located in the Australian claim area of Antarctica.

The height of the volcanic cone is 371 m above sea level and its towering from the rink, striking peak is the only ice-free location in the environment. For this reason, the Gaussberg is an important landmark in the Antarctic coastal region.

The volcano forms the southeastern tip of the Gaussberg - Kerguelen ocean ridge, which also includes the Heard Island and McDonald are next to the Kerguelen. Therefore, it is frequently the subject of volcanological and geological research.

The Gaussberg was first spotted as a dark collection on March 29, 1902 by Erich von Drygalski, the head of the first German South Polar Expedition, as he ascended with a balloon. A few days later took Drygalski and his staff a reconnaissance trip by carriage to the survey about 80 km away. During a total of 13 - day mission, the volcano was explored and measured. They named him - as the research vessel of the expedition - named after the mathematician and geographer Carl Friedrich Gauss.
