Gauze

Gauze [ ɡa zə ː ] or gauze [ mʊl ] is a lightweight, semi- sheer fabric in leno, mock leno or plain weave, the threads are offset against each other in leno weave less than in the latter two species.

Word origin

The foreign loan word or gauze was taken from the French, with the French gauze apparently originally comes from the Arabic قز / qazz. A linguistic connection here is with the Palestinian city of Gaza possible, and as potentially a former production site for this tissue.

The word comes from Mull, however, as a term for the English fabric mull [ mɐl ], which in turn comes from the Hindi ( Malmal ), and there the meaning " very soft " owns.

Use
