Gavin Newsom

Gavin Christopher Newsom ( born October 10, 1967 in San Francisco, California) is an American politician of the Democratic Party. Since January 2011 he has been Vice- Governor of the State of California; previously he was since 2004 the mayor of San Francisco.

Life and career

Newsom's great-grandfather emigrated in 1865 from Ireland to the United States. Both parents Gavin Newsom were judges in California.

Newsom attended Redwood High School, where he made 1985 with a degree. His studies at Santa Clara University, where he graduated in 1989 with a bachelor's degree in political science from.

On 9 December 2003 Newsom won the mayoral election in San Francisco, he was re-elected with over 75 % of the votes for a second term on November 6, 2007.

Newsom was founded in 2004 outside of the United States known as he opened the marriage for gays and lesbians in San Francisco. It married thousands of couples. These marriages were later declared by the courts to be invalid. 26 July 2008 Gavin Newsom married actress Jennifer Siebel. The couple has a daughter who was born in 2009.

Newsom initially aspired to the candidacy of the Democratic Party for the California gubernatorial election in 2010, withdrew its application, however, already on 30 October 2009 back. On 2 November 2010 he was elected Lieutenant Governor of California. He defeated while the Republican incumbent Abel Maldonado with 50 to 39 percent of the votes cast pretty clearly. He took office on January 10, 2011, and thus only a week after Gov. Jerry Brown. Reason was that he wanted to fulfill his duties as mayor until his successor has been determined by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. New Mayor of San Francisco was Edwin M. Lee.

Gavin Newsom announced in September 2012 that he will bid for the Democratic governor nomination in 2014, if the non-runner to get 76 -year incumbent Jerry Brown for re-election. In the case of Brown's refusal, he is considered one of the aussrichtsreichsten candidates for the highest office in the U.S. West Coast state. However, Newsom also announced to support Governor Brown and to seek re-election as lieutenant governor, Brown was supposed to start for another term. After Brown but in February 2014 announced a further application for governor, Newsom candidate in November 2014 for a second term as lieutenant governor.
