Gavin Simonds, 1st Viscount Simonds

Gavin Turnbull Simonds, 1st Viscount Simonds, KC, PC ( born November 28, 1881 in Reading, † June 28, 1971 ) was a British lawyer, politician and Lord Chancellor of Great Britain.

Life

Simonds was born one of three sons of the master brewer Louis de Luze Simonds and his wife Mary Elizabeth Turnbull. On 28 March 1912 he married Mary Hope Mellor, with whom he had two children, but both died before him. His education was Simonds at Winchester College before taking up the study of classical antiquity studies at New College, Oxford University. This he graduated in 1904 with a Bachelor of Arts and in 1906 called to the Bar at Lincoln's Inn. On April 15, 1924, he was named Edward VIII 's Counsel. In 1937 he was appointed Judge of the High Court of Justice and defeated the same year a knight. In 1943 he returned to his alma mater back completed a part-time graduate studies with a Master of Arts. The following year he was appointed as Baron Simonds of Sparsholt in the County of Southamptonzum Lord Justice and member of the Privy Council. He held until 1951 this position. Then he took over at the request of Winston Churchill, the office of Lord Chancellor. 1952, the hereditary barony Baron Simonds, of Sparsholt, he was awarded in the County of Southampton. With the award of another title as Viscount Simonds, of Sparsholt in the County of Southampton Simonds in 1954 he became again the activity as Lord Justice on. With 81 years in 1962, he went into retirement. Besides his work as a judge Simonds was also High Steward of the city of Winchester and training, volunteered as Lord Steward of the University of Oxford.
