Gavin Strang

Gavin strand (* July 10, 1943 in Crieff, Perth and Kinross, Scotland) is a former British Labour Party politician, who was forty years a member of the House of Commons and, among others, between 1997 and 1998 Minister of State for Transport.

Life

After visiting the Morrison 's Academy graduated strand studying agricultural science at the University of Edinburgh and at Churchill College, University of Cambridge, and in 1966 was first employed as a business consultant after graduation, before he then from 1968 worked as an agronomist to 1970.

Subsequently, he was first elected in the general election of June 18, 1970 Member in the House of Commons and represented there by 1 May 1997, Edinburgh East constituency. After the election of the Labour Party in the general election of February 1974, he was first Parliamentary Under Secretary in the Ministry of Energy and then from 1976 to 1979 in the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.

After the election defeat of his party against the Conservative Party in the general election in 1979, he was spokesman for the opposition Labour Group on Agriculture in the House and remained in this position until 1982. Later he was from 1992 to 1997 Opposition spokesman for Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.

After he was elected in the general election on May 1, 1997 now for the constituency of Edinburgh East and Musselburgh again as a member in the House of Commons, Prime Minister Tony Blair appointed him as Minister of State for Transport (Minister of Transport ) in its first cabinet. In July 1998, he was in that office, replaced by the former Minister of State for the Armed Forces, John Reid.

Last time was stranded after the general election of May 5, 2005 until the general election on 6 May 2010 was member of the House of Commons for the constituency of Edinburgh East.
