Gävle

Gävle [ jɛ vlə ː ], formerly Gefle, is a city in the Swedish historic province Gastrikland and provincial capital of Gävleborg.

Geography

Gävle is located at the mouth of Gavleåns in the Gulf of Bothnia. The city streets are laid out mainly at right angles. Hemlingby is a district of Gävle.

History

Gävle was founded in 1446 and is the oldest city in Norrland. The town served as a port for the products from the northern mountain areas.
